[Special Fringe] Get Festive Playing Ogi Matsuri Daiko

Korei no Kai

Ogi Port Festival (Ogi Minato Matsuri) is usually held on the last weekend of August every year. This festival dates back to the days when Ogi was a gold and silver shipping port and people would go to Kisaki Shrine to pray for safe voyages, bringing rice as an offering. Today, locals go door-to-door throughout Ogi during the festival, performing a wide array of Shinto and folk arts and carrying portable shrines. There is a lot of dancing: Ogi Okesa, lion dances, onidaiko (demon deity drum dances), and more. The local taiko group and Kodo members also participate, pulling taiko floats throughout Ogi as they play Ogi Matsuri Daiko, a lively piece composed by Kodo's Yoshikazu Fujimoto. This festival boasts a huge fireworks display over the harbor, which makes for a wonderful finale for Sado’s summer festival season. This year, we’re not waiting until the end of summer to bring the beats of Ogi Matsuri Daiko back to town. Join local taiko group Korei no Kai and Kodo on Day 2 of EC to play this festive piece to liven up the festival. It’s really catchy, so prepare to get hooked.
