Massie Toyooka

Born and raised on Miyako Island, I went on to become a keyboard player before returning to my roots in Okinawan music. I play a range of instruments, including uta-sanshin [vocals & 3-stringed banjo], niko [erhu, 2-stringed fiddle], shima-daiko [island drum], and whistling through my fingers. My creative activities include writing lyrics, composing music, and forging new styles of expression that use paintings, design, and video. I share livestreams on YouTube and perform around 100 times a year on location at venues ranging from Okinawan eateries to outdoor events, school performances to weddings. I also deliver lectures on the Battle of Okinawa, Okinawan culture, and more. I’ve performed throughout Japan and in Malaysia and Vanuatu, too.
