Saeki-bayashi is a folk performing art that started in 2020 in the Kisaichi area of Katano City, Osaka. It was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, sparked by desire to launch a new taiko-based festival to ward off plagues and bring about bountiful harvests. Kodo performed this o-hayashi, or festival music, in its 2024 production “Mountains.” In this workshop, participants will learn Saeki-bayashi’s unique rhythms and playing techniques, experiencing firsthand the spirit of prayer and the power of performing arts deeply rooted within a community. Choose between playing the taiko part or shinobue (bamboo flute) part when you sign up for this lively workshop.

・If you select the taiko part, please bring your own bachi (drumsticks) and katsugi-okedo (portable barrel drum) strap. ・If you select the shinobue (bamboo flute) part, please bring own happon-choshi (#8) shinobue. ・Clothing suitable for exercise ・Sports towel ・Water (or other hydrating drink)

・This workshop will be conducted in Japanese and English. ・Drums will be lent to participants. ・You need to supply your own bachi (drumsticks) and strap or shinobue (bamboo flute). These items will not be available to borrow or buy, so please come prepared. If you need to check the suitability of your equipment, please contact EC via this form. ・This workshop venue has a wheelchair accessible restroom. ・Workshop observation is not permitted. ・You will select your preferred instrument (taiko or shinobue) when you buy your ticket.
